Guide to getting started

Before starting your driving lessons there are a few things that you can do yourself to help you on your way.

APPLYING FOR YOUR PROVISIONAL DRIVING LICENSE

You can apply for your provisional license up to 3months before your 17th birthday. But you'll have to wait until you're 17, and you've received and signed your provisional licence, before you can start driving and you've received and signed your provisional licence, before you can start driving and take your Theory Test. The current cost of a first provisional licence is £38.00 (for a car, motorcycle, medium/large vehicle, minibus/bus). You can apply for this either online or by filling in a D1 form from the post office and sending your identity documents off. You will need to send passport size photographs with your application as all provisional licenses are now issued with photo cards.

EYE SIGHT

You must be able to read, in good day light, a vehicle number plate with letters 79.4mm (3.1in), from a distance of 20.5metres ( approx 67feet). If you need glasses or contact lenses to do this, you will need to wear them whist driving. If in doubt contact an optician to do an eyesight test before you start driving. Many offer free eyesight tests.

THEORY & HAZARD PERCEPTION TEST

Before you are able to take the practical driving test, you must sit a theory and hazard perception test. The theory test comes in two parts - there's a multiple-choice section and a hazard perception section. You have to pass both parts of the test at the same session to pass your theory test. You can start studying or even take these tests before you start your lessons. However this isn’t a must, as I teach the theory side of things alongside practical lessons. There are lots of learning materials available to help you with this, such as books and CD Roms. There are a selection available to purchase in my website shop.
